Menopause

Menopause is a term used to describe the permanent cessation of the primary functions of the human ovaries which are the ripening and release of ova and the release of hormones that cause both the creation and the subsequent shedding of the uterine lining. (also known as a period) Menopause usually occurs in women in their late 40s or early 50s, Menopause signals the end of the fertile phase of a woman's life. This transition in a woman's life is usually not sudden, but tends to occur over a number of years and is natural in the process of aging. There are some symptoms though that seem to affect some women more than others and can even disrupt their daily life. Women who suffer from conditions that affect the reproductive system such as endometriosis or cancer of the reproductive organs may go into menopause at a younger age. These conditions may create more significant health problems- both physically and emotionally for the affected woman. Menopause is change that all women experience, assuming she reaches middle age. Early menopause is linked to smoking, illness, higher bmi, race and ethnicity.

Symptoms

Menopause has a wide variety of symptoms for women ranging from physical to emotional. These symptoms can include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, increased stress, fatigue, vaginal dryness, mood swings and forgetfulness. These symptoms are due to the hormonal changes that the woman’s body is going through. Many women also feel emotional during this time because they feel older and less attractive. Menopause signifies a new stage in life for many women.

Treatment
